When the pandemic started, we had a difficult time getting meat from our local grocers. It was even harder to find healthy meat options, like grass-fed, uncured, and antibiotic-free. So, I started looking for a meat delivery subscription and I’m so glad I found Butcher Box.
Now, in addition to our other grocery deliveries, every two weeks we get a box of healthy meats. Ordering from Butcher Box means I don’t have to add meat to any of my other grocery orders. We’ve been able to stock up our freezer easily.

How to Get Started
Butcher Box is a meat delivery subscription. When you sign up, you’ll choose the types of meats you want to receive, how much meat, and how often.

Tips for Ordering
You get to choose the categories of meat you receive, ButcherBox chooses the cuts that go in your box each order.
We started with a Chicken/Beef/Pork box delivered every two weeks. Each box had different cuts of all three types of meat. It’s fun to try new things.
We recently switched to customizing our box. Before our next shipment, I can go through and choose the exact items we want. After doing the random boxes for a while, we found our favorite items. Now, we order exactly what we want in each shipment. Customizing has been a great way to strategically stock the small freezer I added to our pantry.
Your Role After Ordering
You hardly have to do anything with ButcherBox. If you choose one of the standard boxes, you don’t need to do anything after placing your first order. They will automatically ship you meat at the frequency you choose.
Butcher Box notifies you when you order is coming up, in case you want to make any changes. They will also let you know about any add-ons that are available to include in your box. These are additional cuts of meat you can add to your box for an additional fee. We add two packages of bacon to every order…yum!
When your box ships, they will send you tracking information. Your box is packed with dry ice to keep the meat frozen during delivery.
Delivery Method and Tips
Your Butcher Box ships within 1-2 days by a third party shipper. In our case, most of our shipments come from LSO Freight out of Oklahoma City. We have also received a shipment from FedEx. Butcher Box will send you a tracking number you can use to track your shipment on the shipper’s website.
I recommend keeping an eye out for your box. ButcherBox will send you an email after delivery, but not a text message. Sometimes I’ve missed the email and our box sat on the porch for two hours. Thankfully, it is well packed with dry ice (be careful), so the meat stays frozen.
If your shipment takes more than a day, don’t worry. They have engineered their packaging and add the appropriate amount of dry ice to keep your meat safe. The one package we received from FedEx took two days to arrive and inside all the meat was still frozen solid.
Selection and Stock Availability
Butcher Box is a meat delivery subscription only. It’s the only thing they do, and they do it well. You can choose from beef, chicken, pork, and some fish. But they do that one thing really well. Because we get most of our meat from ButcherBox, I don’t have to worry about the lack of selection or availability ordering meat from local stores.
The specific cuts you receive in your Butcher Box will vary based on availability. Sometimes you get more of one type of meat than the others, but you’ll always get the mix you signed up for.
If you customize your box, you’ll only be able to choose from available cuts. Availability will vary each time you order, but we’ve been very happy with the variety of cuts to choose from each time.
