State of the Basement

Our basement is coming along, but it is not quite there yet. I try not to get wrapped up in timelines, because then I feel defeated when I realize it has already been about a year and a half since we started the basement. But, then I remind myself that is why we started a year and a half ago, because we knew it would take time.

In my April house tour, I did not include the basement. In my recent fall slideshow tour, there were only photos of the more finished areas of the basement. Today will be the first video tour of the basement, in its current state.

5 Reasons to Watch This Short Video

  1. See a sneak peek of an amazing bench project I just finished and will be sharing soon!
  2. See me in my everyday “natural’ state, and by natural I mean towel dried hair and 3-minute makeup (tinted BB cream, a dash of eyeshadow, and mascara). Don’t judge…I am not a get up and spend hours getting ready kind of gal. And, there is nothing that can tame my freckled face after a sunny summer.
  3. See what a semi-DIY basement project looks like mid-stream, including lack of doors, molding, and pipes sticking out of the wall.
  4. See that sometimes I have trouble with DIY projects, too. Refer to the big blotchy black wall in the playroom.
  5. See my studio in the middle of the weekly project storm. I almost debated not showing it or cleaning it, but I gave in. I think it is an orderly mess, or at least it makes sense with the way my mind works.

Here is the current state of our basement:

I’m not sure what has changed but the video plays now. I don’t have to go to YouTube and look it up. Much easier! I’m impressed! Stairs workout. Vacuuming! You do keep in shape! And you have so much space!! And you keep on top of your projects. Seems like yesterday you were laying floors, hanging the feature wall…looks really nice,ly planned and thought through! Enjoy your day! And your craft room wasn’t messy. Just in use. Messy would be disorganized junk all over!!!

Gwen, So glad the video played easily. I have switched to Vimeo with a plus service that makes sure my videos work on mobile devices…yay! Good comment about the craft room. I like calling it in use. You know those “On Air” signs for radio, maybe I need to make an “In Use” sign for outside my studio :)

Cute whale wall. I like how you have moved your projects around your family’s interests. Lots of inspiration!
How did you decide on where to start the white part of the whale?

Shauna, Thank you! I just made the whale white below the water line and blue above the water line. As for the water line, I just made it at eye level.

It’s so refreshing to see this perspective. Your basement is very inspiring!

Char, thanks so much. Glad you weren’t put off by rough door openings and half done spaces :)

I loved hearing a fellow Minnesotan accent in the video! So excited to see the finished mud room. Winter will hit any day now (hahaha)!

Oh nooooo! Don’t remind me. I am sure you know…the basement mud room is specifically for winter…a dressing zone for winter play! I better get that finished!

Hi Jackie, it is such a wonderfully large space but you have made it all look so lovely and cosy and fun. It must be so nice for you all to chill out as a family and still have your own individual spaces to enjoy! On a side note, I remember you recently said that you don’t use the colour red in your home, so I had a little chuckle when I saw the red ikea sideboard, hiding away in the gym! It reminds me of some of the items my husband brought with him when we moved in together for the first time. I seemed to have a knack for placing them in areas with low traffic!(By the way, I have loved that sideboard forever!) Have a great day.

Isabella, I have a love/hate relationship with red. I have learned over the years that it cannot be a main part of my color scheme. Although, I still love it on some pieces. I love the cabinet in the gym. We also have red touches in my sons superhero bedroom and a red cabinet nightstand in the guest room. I love the red glass front cabinet too, but now it comes in teal and I am so tempted to swap it out.

I agree with your assessment that the red stays in the less frequented rooms :)
