We are knee-deep in creating a fun gallery wall for the playroom. We’ve got the placement squared away, but still need to put pictures in frames and do some finishing touches. A full reveal will be coming soon. But, first, let’s take a closer look at some art we made for the gallery wall.

Pirate Play Room Gallery Wall

This was actually a project we tackled way back in the doldrums of winter. I knew it would be a while before we got them hung up, but during the long days of winter I needed a good DIY project to do with the kids.  Wood art panels paired with my endless supply of fabric scraps made for the perfect easy art project.

To start with we stained the wood art boards with a dark stain.  I let my oldest help apply the stain with cloth.

Next we chose some images to use and I cut out shapes from fabric scraps. A blue patterned anchor. Teal A-H-O-Y letters. A red patterned X.  The anchor was too big for a sheet of paper, so I folded my fabric in half and pinned the half anchor “pattern” along the folded edge.  I taped a print out of the ahoy letters to a window and traced the letters onto the teal fabric before cutting them out.

We used Mod Podge to apply the fabric shapes to the wood.  We got a few bubbles under the fabric, but not too bad.  The bubbles were the worst on the thin teal cotton fabric.  The other two fabrics were a home decor weight and did not bubble.

At this point they were still looking a little plain for my taste.  So, I cut up strips of red patterned and yellow chevron fabric to wrap around the edges on two of the pieces.  We used Mod Podge to apply the fabric on the edges. Then we coated the entire front and sides with Mod Podge to seal everything.

On the X panel, I hand painted the “marks the spot” phrase with my favorite brass paint. I detailed how I transfer letters for hand painting here. To spruce up the edges on this piece, I used some brass corner brackets.

This trio of pirate art adds lots of fun color and dimension to the gallery wall. Soon I will share a full reveal and details on the rest of the gallery wall.  Until then remember these happy pops of yellow :)

Love this! How do you cut the fabric so that there is minimal fraying on the edges? This is always my problem when I am incorporating fabric into Mod Podge projects.

Sabrina, I don’t know if I have any great advice for fraying. I cut the shapes and applied them immediately. I just nipped any stray threads as we put them on the board, but I really didn’t have a lot of fraying.

Cool art work! These are great decorations for a room or even on nautical themed party. :)
