The tour of The Commons Hotel and Beacon Public House restaurant further solidified my love of industrial schoolhouse design. It is one of my favorite styles for making vintage items seem fresh again. I was so inspired by the hotel and the potential for using this style at home that I created an Industrial Schoolhouse mood board to share with you all today.
I have to give credit to Kate for the term “Dine-In Library” from her recent roundup of dining rooms that double as libraries. Such a great way to describe a multi-function room. I have had a few clients ask for something similar, because they want to make their dining room useful for more than just the occasional holiday dinner.
This Mood Board for All includes a complete source list after the image to make it easy for you to shop the room. I also mixed in some DIY suggestions for the pricier items in the room. Enjoy!
1. Chevron Curtain Panels and Brass Curtain Rod – Bring a little of the chevron wall graphic from the hotel home with these chevron curtain panels. Hang them from a large brass curtain rod, choice inspired by the large brass handle on the sliding door to the private dining room at Beacon Public House.
2. Chalkboard Globe – A fun spot to write a favorite quote, book passage, or message to a loved one. This globe is also great inspiration for an easy DIY project…you just need a globe with a nice stand and chalkboard paint.
3. Vintage-Style Globe – Start a collection of globes. Look for various sizes and heights. I think globe collections look best when you limit the colors. In this case, I stuck with black and cream globes. In The Commons Hotel lobby they used all blue globes.
4. Library Wine Holder – A good book needs a good glass of wine.
5. Pacific Madeline Banquette – The goodness of a wing-back chair, only a little wider.
6. Custom Subway Sign Pillow – A throw pillow is an easy way to introduce the street name sign fabric we saw on the chair backs in hotel lobby and on the large banquette outside the restaurant. Or, follow this great tutorial, from Lil Blue Boo, and make your own!
7. Industrial Cafe Table – Instead of a full-sized dining table, use an adjustable-height cafe table. Also, check out this similar table with half the price tag. Also don’t miss this pricier, but reclaimed metal version.
8. Industrial Cage Light Chandelier – Just like the cage light fixture in the double rooms and over the dining table in the penthouse. If you can find the cages or wire lamp shade frames, you can use a hardwire kit like this one to replicate the look.
9. Starburst Mirror – This super affordable mirror is a great stand-in for the large starburst mirror on the exposed brick wall in the private dining room at Beacon Public House.
10. Walnut Ampersand – Any typography goes well with an industrial schoolhouse style library or reading room. This beautiful ampersand was cut from walnut.
11. Rustic Dining Chair – This chair is almost identical to the dining chairs in Beacon Public House. Add a pair to complete the seating area with the cafe table and settee.
12. Accordion Sconces – We saw sconces shining down on the bookshelves in the hotel lobby. There were also accordion style sconces on each side of the mirror in the private dining room at Beacon Public House. At home they would make great adjustable reading lights by the settee.
13. Tall Bookshelf with Ladder – Love this {almost} floor to ceiling bookshelf with sliding ladder. Also love the label holders on each shelf.
14. Vintage Book Sets (Yellow Nancy Drew Books, Golden Yellow Vintage Book Set, Steel Blue Decorative Books, Vintage Teal Book Set, True Blue Vintage Book Set) – Color-coordinated books look beautiful! I love how they chose a few colors (blue, yellow, and green) to use in The Commons Hotel. You can search for book sets by color on Etsy, or look for books in your chosen color at thrift shops and garage sales.
15. Mini Black Globe – At only 9″ tall, this mini globe is the perfect size for an accent on the bookshelves.

Gorgeous mood board! Love it! :) You did a great job. Btw, we’re almost done with our dining room! Almost. Can’t wait to send you “after” pics!
Dee, I am looking forward to the pictures :)
Wow, this mood board is fabulous – I love every single item on it! If only I could afford it all :)
Love your idea to DIY the chalk board globe because the price of that one is insane!
Kristin, Agreed! DIY is definitely the way to go for the globe.
I really like the chevron drapes and the overall look of the mood board.
I like all the ideas… you did a great job. I’d love to have such a wing-back chair, but can’t seem to find one here in Germany.
