Building a Room Around a Turquoise Pedestal Table

April 15, 2013 By Jackie

I would love to wait until this area is finished before showing it to you, but I got an amazing deal on this table and want to share before it’s unavailable.

In the angled nook in our basement, we plan to create a game table area.  I want to make built-in benches with lots of pillows.  With a nice table and a couple of chairs we hope it will be a fun and comfortable place to hang out for family game night.  Before committing to a bench configuration or chairs, I wanted to find the perfect table.

I first fell in love with this TOO by Blu Dot table from Target when I recommended it to a client for the Fresh Start Family Room.  At the time, the price was $299.  Not bad at all, but I decided to wait for a sale.

Well, several months passed and sales had come and gone, but I never jumped on ordering the table.  That is until one night when I saw it was on clearance.  I nearly had a panic attack and had to order right away before it was gone.  (Don’t worry…it is still available on clearance as of this posting).

We aren’t quite ready to focus on the game table area yet, but I could not pass up my dream modern turquoise pedestal table at 40% off.  The price is now 179.98 (40% off) for this beauty of a 42″ diameter table.  With our RedCard we got an additional 5% off and also qualified for free shipping, so the only additional cost we payed was for sales tax.

Turquoise Blu Dot Pedestal Table

The table arrived really well packaged in a giant box.  The base required minimal assembly and then you attach it to the top.  Let’s just say the assembly was easy enough I had superman my 3-year old help.  These photos are not staged.  I put him to work ripping off all the foam wrapping around the table top, while I assembled the base.

buildingtable3

Then, he helped screw in the feet.

buildingtable2

Lastly, he helped screw the base to the top.  He inserts each screw with his tiny little hands, then I tighten them with the allen wrench.

buildingtable1

Okay, so if you haven’t figured it out by now, I am totally smitten with this table.  Online it says it is “blue” and appears to be a baby-ish blue.  I was pleasantly surprised the color is really turquoise.  The table I coveted in my favorite color…what could be better?!

The nook is actually about 90″ square, so we certainly could have gotten away with a larger 60″ table.  If this was a dining area, I definitely would have done that.  Since we want a casual, cozy game area, the smaller 42″ table is better.  It is the perfect size for 4-6 people to gather around a board game or play cards.

I am super eager to get the rest of this space finished off.  I created a little mood board to show what I am thinking.  Let me explain the chairs…I don’t plan on having three different types, but I am torn.  I love all three of these options.  Which would you pick?

GameTableBasement

1.  Bend Dining Chair – This is an outdoor chair, but I am sure it is as awesome indoors.  I love the herringbone design. The kicker for me on these chairs is the price.

2.  Marais A Side Chair Yellow – Here is another fun yellow option.  I love the style and color, but I am concerned about comfort.  I want to have long, fun family game nights without anyone complaining of sore bottoms.  The metal chairs also might be cold in the winter.

3.  Pacific Chloe Chairs Set of Two – This is my current frontrunner.  It is a completely different style.  It’s all about warmth and comfort here.  I love this color as well, and the fabric looks so rich.  I just wonder if they are too formal for my casual, fun space, or with the family room only steps a way will they fit right in?

Here is the rest of the sources for the light, pillows, and fabric to make even more pillows :)

4.  Ombre Fossette Pillow – All my colors in one fun pillow.  It reminds me of confetti.

5.  Ink Blot Pillow – Simple and graphic.  I definitely want to bring in touches of navy.

6.  Yellow Origami Throw Pillow – I love the intricate pleats on this pillow.  I need to grab some the next time I am at World Market.

7.  Gray Chevron Pillow Cover – I already ordered two of these.  Lily Pillow is an easy shop that opened just a few weeks ago.  He prices are amazing (this coming from me…the woman who makes pillows to save money).

8.  Pickled Wood and Clear Glass Pendant with Rope Cord – I saw this light in person at a local store called Patina.  It is so gorgeous!  I have not been able to get it out of my head.  I think it would be the perfect pendant to drop over the table.  Love that the glass shade won’t block any natural light from the windows.  The rope cord is a fun nautical touch.

9.  Too by Blu Dot Platten Round Table – Blue

10.  Mustard Tall Chevron Fabric – I just got a yard of this fabric in the mail last week.  Gorgeous!  It is the perfect shade of yellow…not too yellow and not too orange.  The tall chevron is super chic.

11. Embrace in Aquarius Fabric – I ordered this same fabric in yellow a while back and plan to use it in the playroom.  I love the print so much, I decided to get some in teal for pillows in the game area.

12.  Organic Tridents in Ocean Fabric – Another touch of navy.  This is a great geometric print from Cloud 9.  I like how the triangular shapes relate to the chevrons.

13. Organic Abacus in Pool Fabric – This print sort of adds a stripe to the mix without really being a stripe.  The pool color is lovely.

14. Cameron in Storm Fabric – This is a fun new take on a chevron print.  I know, I am mixing lots of chevrons here, but I think it is going to be fabulous.  They are all different scales, so it should work.

15. Organic Tridents in Daffodil Fabric – I couldn’t pick just one colorway of this print.  Nothing wrong with using the same pattern in a couple different colors.

16. Cameron in Aquarius Fabric – Ditto…nothing wrong with using the same pattern in a couple different colors.

I ordered all the fabrics above, so I can get started making pillows.  So…want to come over for game night?  If so, which chair would you prefer to sit in?

I love the Herringbone chair the best! But the price is a hold back, I’d definitely choose the other yellow chair and just sit on a pillow if it got uncomfortable after a while. I love the yellow with the table too much to choose another color!

Sara, maybe I just have to wait for all the outdoor furniture to go on clearance…sadly that is a few months off.

World Market has a version of option 2 in yellow on sale for $85 each for World Market ‘members’. I don’t see it online, but I was there last Friday, and they were with the outdoor furniture.

I do think that the softer the chair, the better for a game area where you’re likely to be seated for long periods of time. The blue chairs you picked from WM do have a flame retardant on them (click the CA Prop 65 link on the description for more info), and I don’t know if that concerns you are not. Are there any yellow fabric chairs that you’d consider?

I love the fabrics you chose!! I’m redoing my daughter’s room in blue, yellow and green…and I may have to incorporate some of those fabrics!:)

Can’t wait to see how your game area turns out!!

Thanks for the input Beth. If those teal chairs came in yellow, I would jump on them. I have not come across any good upholstered yellow chairs.

My fabrics should be arriving this week…I can’t wait. I hope to be able to share them soon.

Have you seen these chairs? Yellow, wipeable upholstery! http://www.amazon.com/Gotham-Side-Chair-Upholstery-Yellow/dp/B009N792E6

They are kind of awesome IMO:), but there is lots of leg action going on and that might look a little wild with the legs on your pedestal table. The perfect yellow upholstered chair is out there somewhere:).

Beth, Good find. I love those! I wish there were pics from more angles or reader reviews. Definitely adding them to my short list. I love the Eames Eiffel style base.

    I LOVE your moodboard – again. ;)
I would go for the Pacific Chloe chairs because they look the most comfortable. They are also quite affordbale if you take into consideration they are upholstered chairs and compare them with the metal chairs that look awesome but as if they became uncomfortable to sit on after a while.

I love chair #1 the best as well! It’s a bit expensive though, yeah… hope you can find it on sale. The other two are gorgeous though, although I do like the yellow+turquoise pairing so I’d go with a yellow one.

I think both of the yellow chairs would be cold and uncomfortable. Just looking at them makes me want to get up out of my chair and walk around. lol

The blue chair is pricey but would definitely be the best choice, imo.

Did you see the online review for the table? A one-star review that said the table top is made of pressed wood that scratched deeply the very first time it was used. I’m just wondering what your experience with the table has been.

Is it, in fact, pressed wood? The advertisement makes it sound as though it’s steel.

Great job with your mood board.

      Riley,

Yes I read the review, but I try not to let one review sway my buying decisions. The base of the table is powder coated steel. The top is MDF with a very thick, seemingly durable coat of the same paint. Ours arrived unscratched and looks perfect.

We have some similar painted MDF furniture in our nursery. We have had it over 5 years and although we have had a few scratches, it is still in remarkably good condition.

I am really happy with the table at the price I payed, and I think it would have been worthwhile at full price too.

I vote chair #1! It looks like a combo of comfy and stylish, and it also seems versatile for when you need to use them in other ways. (think parties and such)

I love the Marais A Yellow Chairs with that table. They look so fun and would add some great color to the area.

Oh I loved chair two but in reality I thought of your little boys knees on that cold metal and I think that’s not so great! You will I know keep looking and find the perfect game chairs. Playing games with our kids was so fun. We tried to build good sportsmanship that all losers had to shake the winner’s hand and say yay!! And celebrate! Because its no fun to win if it makes everyone else mad!! I think it worked. Both my girls still love their own game times!! You’ll be using this table for years (puzzles, Legos , play dough) so enjoy! Love all the colors and the light is my favorite. Most unusual!

Number 2 chair!! Please, Please, Please! I can already picture it! You would not get away with the number 3 chairs around that table…they are way too formal for the style of table, and the yellow will look soo perfect with the table :)
If you are really concerned about comfort, is there a place you would be able to use the number 3 chairs, and swap some around that you already own? I would definitely buy 1 number 2 and try it, then try a cusion on it too :)

Love the fabrics u chose. Chairs are so hard to find. I’ve recently started using some outdoor chairs I bought last summer in my kitchen….so darn comfy. Got them at Kohls. Love bringing outdoor in…durable faux wicker look.

What a great table! I think number 2 is the cutest, but agree that it would not be too comfy so I would probably go with number 3(it looks so soft and amazing…). Also love the fun pillows.

  16. Andrea says

    April 15, 2013 at 9:41 pm

Would you even perhaps consider something completely different and choose an ottoman/cube seat arrangement, rather than a standard chair? They scream ‘games area’to me, and I can imagine the kids would absolutely love them as they’d be so different to anything else in the rest of the house!

    • Jackie says

      April 15, 2013 at 10:12 pm

Great idea, Andrea. We plan to have a built in bench around half the table and I think I assumed the kids would sit on the bench and the adults would use the chairs…but that doesn’t have to be the case.

      • Andrea says

        April 16, 2013 at 8:58 pm

And the other good thing about some individual cube seats would be that they’d be usable for other functions – mini games spot for the kids, building cubbies with blankets etc! Limitless fun & options! And think of all the fabric options you could explore :)

I love, love, love those #3 chairs. I dont know about around that table but man, they rock.

  18. Colleen says

Definitely the bend chairs! I have them and love them! For extra level comfort (mostly for my parents/grandparents), I’ve ensured oblong pillows for lumbar support are always resting on the chairs and have even added homemade chair cusions (tied) to double up on cushion for the “tookus”. They’re much more casual but if you are in love with the teal ones (which, they are beautiful), you can always do something to “dress ’em down” like dip-dying the legs into some yellow paint!

    April 16, 2013 at 7:02 am

Love the Bend chairs-would they comfortably fit around the table because of their wide seat and “arms”? Saw similar metal garden chairs at Old Time Pottery (though, sadly no herringbone pattern :)

I’m sure whatever you end up choosing will fit the space and your family perfectly!

    April 16, 2013 at 7:32 am

Great choices, I see your dilemma. If it is only the adults that would sit in them, then I say either of the yellow chairs would be great. If kids will be using them, then I have to go with #3 for the softness. I know my boys never sit still while playing and are often sitting on their knees. I would worry about their feet getting caught in #1 and their knees hurting in #2. Since #3 is for a pair, the price is not bad and you could always reupholster them later with a yellow fabric. Another good thing about #3 is WM puts their chairs on sale quite often so you’d probably be able to get a better deal, especially if you sign up for the free loyalty club.

That table is awesome, I wish I had a spot for it in my house!

I can’t wait to see the finished room.

Of those three, I think chair 3 is the best mix of comfort and style, plus it’s a nice color. I like chair 1 a lot too because it is very stylish, and also a nice color. Chair 2 looks uncomfortable to me, and a throw pillow (added for comfort) might just slide out the back. Besides chair 3 and chair 1, the Gotham side chair suggested by Beth also looks very nice. Amazon also suggested several other yellow chairs, among them: the LeMox, the Cafe Side Chair, and the Cracked Ice Retro Chair. Links:
