Mirror Mirror on the Wall…

…whose the craftiest of them all?  Ok, it’s not me.  Don’t worry, I won’t go all wicked witch on you.  I am actually just here to share the awesome mirror I hung on my studio wall.

The space between my stair tread shelves was carefully calculated to allow room for a vintage mirror.  I almost put shelves wall to wall, but ultimately knew it would lead to a more cluttered look than I wanted.  The mirror provides a little decorative relief from all the those functional shelves.

This mirror was sort of a freebie when I bought these retro dressers.  When I found the larger dresser to use for a media stand I was pleased with the price tag.  Then, the shop owner told me it included the mirror and the matching dresser.  It felt like getting a mirror and dresser free.  At the time I had no need or plans for a mirror.  It has been in our garage since last summer.  Finally, inspiration struck as I was working on the studio.

The”free” mirror was not without its flaws.  It had some repair work done with the wrong color (much darker) wood filler.  It also had a gap in the frame at the bottom right corner.  The frame was sturdy, but I was unable to use a mallet to get the frame back in shape.  I realized for the mirror to work it was going to need a little coverup with caulk and paint.

First, I filled the corner gap with several beads of caulk.  I let it cure between each coat.  It took a few rounds to get the gap fully filled.  On the final one, I smoothed the caulk flush with the surrounding frame.  Next, I taped around the mirror edge and the fretwork detail at the top.  I roughed up the frame with sand paper. Then, I painted 3 coats of Martha Stewart Tailor’s Chalk (same color I used on the neighboring shelves), leaving the fretwork the original finish.

Hubby helped me hang the mirror on my favorite Ook hook picture hangers.  We hang all our mirrors with these bad boys.  They really work well, and don’t make giant holes in the wall.

I think the mirror makes my studio feel less office-y.  A mirror makes any space feel classier.  And, when you peer into my office from the family room you see the reflection of a pretty awesome focal wall we are working on :)

If you look closely at these pictures, you’ll spy a few other studio updates.  I will be sharing more details soon!

I love how you left some of the natural wood. Good choice!

Thanks Nicki! I almost painted it white, but I am so glad I left a bit of wood.

You’ve put a lot of thought into your office and it has paid off! It looks so pretty. I would have thrown all my junk in the drawers and called it a day, by now. Lol.

I really likes how that looks, and you are right, it does dress up the space and keep it from looking cluttered. I also like your three hanging light fixtures. I never would have thought of doing that.

The mirror would look extra awesome if you painted the untouched wood a bright pop of a color? Lime would look great against those walls…
