March 20, 2013 By Jackie

I am really excited to bring a new dimension to my blog…video!  I have to admit I am a nervous wreck now at the thought of you (all of you) watching this.  I would probably rather spend more time behind the camera than in front of it.  But, I have so many ideas that could be better shared through video.  So, let’s just call this a little experiment.  I hope you’ll share your reaction.

Yesterday I spent a lot of time in front of a camera.  Melissa Miroslavich came over to take some new head shots for me.  I was nervous.  I don’t get nervous for family photos, but photos of me on the blog are so public…and photos of me are all about me.  There are no cute kids to distract from some weird face I might be making.

Anyway, to ease my nerves I had my makeup and hair done at the salon.  This is so unlike me.  I did not even have hair and makeup done for my wedding (I am not kidding…it was DIY all the way).  But, the time at the salon before the shoot was so relaxing and the girls made me look amazing.  It was a total stress and anxiety reliever.  After Melissa got through with her pictures, I figured I better not let the dolled up face go to waste.  So, I got out the video camera.

Today I am sharing my first video with you…eeek!  It is a fun little look at my new studio where I talk about my favorite parts of the room.  Oh, and at the end I added a sneak peek of the studio closet space I am working on.  Below are links to projects mentioned in the video.

To learn more about some of the projects I mentioned in the video, please check out these posts:

  • Blue Focal Wall
  • Stair Tread Shelves
  • DIY Custom Bamboo Countertop

What did you think?  Should I do more videos…or stay on the other side of the lens?

This video was awesome! You look great & it was fun to see & hear you. I’ve been following your blog & it’s cool to hear what you actually sound like. You should definitely do more videos! Also, I’m in love with your office and can’t wait to see what you do in the closet space.

Thanks Sarah!!! In real-life I probably don’t pause as much in my speech…in video I was trying to think of what to say next. I went unscripted. You can definitely tell I got more comfortable in the later clips. I will definitely be sharing more studio projects soon.

Love that you went unscripted. It’s so much more natural (even if you pause more) than doing something scripted.

The video was great! I love that you took the time to really edit it and make it look professional. Thanks for the tour! It really makes the room seem whole.

I think you did a great job!! I really think we get a better idea of the room layout when we can see you walking around (and sitting around) in it! Plus you can say way more in a vlog than you can typing!! :) Love the studio…you’ve inspired me to do more with my wall behind my desk!

Great job! I can tell that you have been able to spend more time blogging since quitting your job! It is so nice to see you for reals! Well, for video reals!

Yes, I agree with everybody else. Keep these videos coming! You look very pretty and if you dont mind me saying…you look thinner on video. Also, where did you get that blazer…love it!

      Hi Jackie,

I second Brenda’s request for details on the blazer. I absolutely love it!

        Liz,

Thank you. The blazer is from Ann Taylor Loft (just found on clearance this past weekend). I am 5’10” and have always had good luck with blazer’s from Ann Taylor loft. Even though I had the sleeves rolled up in the video, because they have a beautiful gray and white striped lining, the sleeves are actually long enough for my arms. By the way, the lining in the rest of the jacket is deep blue (just like my focal wall). The coat totally screamed my name when I saw it on the rack.

      Brenda,

You are too sweet. I love the thinner comment and don’t mid you saying so. I have lost about 15 lbs of post-baby weight since the headshot was taken. The weight loss is thanks to a Paleo diet and our home gym in our basement.

The blazer was a recent Ann Taylor Loft clearance find. I am tall and a little busty, but I always find their blazers fit me really well. And how could I pass up a teal blazer?!?!

  7. Jessica says

    March 20, 2013 at 6:28 pm

Yes! more videos! And more of the other side of the room, and more of the whole basement!
We’re not here to judge how long it takes, or what order you do it in…we just wanna peak around at all of your fabulous ideas!
Whole basement video coming right up!! :)

      Jessica,

It’s a deal…as soon as I finish the other spaces. There are tons of projects underway right now, so it won’t be too long.

      Lindsey,

Thank you. The blazer is from Ann Taylor Loft (just found on clearance this past weekend). The white slub t-shirt and necklace are also from Ann Taylor loft…I was on a bit of a short shopping timeline to pull a look together.

You did great! I love the video and your jacket is SO cute! I totally almost snagged something similar the other day at Kohls only they didn’t have any more of the teal one so I opted for a Springy orange color. You seem like a natural with the video…I would definitely say keep going with it! :-)

Jackie-It was so much fun to finally meet you. Thank you for doing that video. I’ve tried it myself thinking that it would be a piece of cake, but it can be nerve wracking to be in front of the camera. You look great! Love your hair and make-up. And of course I’m loving how your room is coming together. Can’t wait to see more.

Omgoodness, You’re awesome! You’re also way too self critical and a natural on camera. Keep the Videos. We get so much more of your precious personality and it matches your home too! The videos are way more personable. Your still photo does not do you enough justice. Thank you for truly sharing :)

The video was good and I liked that you went unscripted. I could tell that you were nervous but it was expected since it was your first. You will get less nervous as you do more videos. And please do more videos.

I haven’t done videos but I do a ton of training and presentations at work and non-work (church, kids’ school). One thing that might help you become more comfortable to is write out what you want to cover – not a script but just what you want to talk about in the order you want to do it. This way, you know your basic flow and can then talk about your subjects in order. And I have always found that writing it down makes it more comfortable for me – then I don’t worry about forgetting my plan.

I don’t normally watch online videos, but I enjoyed yours very much. You came across as both likable and knowledgeable. It was interesting to hear what you actually sound like, and I agree with everyone else who said that you look great (an upcoming post on simple Paleo weeknight meals would be very helpful). Plus, it was nice to see the space from multiple angles / viewpoints. Keep up the good work!

You will be my inspiration for the day I’m lucky enough to have my own studio, one I can customize and build myself, of course! But, until then, you will continue to inspire the workspace I am able to have now (no permanent customization allowed)

P.S. I started a color pallet of teal and lime in my home a few years ago, so when I came across your blog recently, it was instant love!

    Jackie,

I loved it :-)! The video was fantastic and as everyone says gives a greater sense of the space and for me the play of light. I also loved getting to see the different angles and enjoyed watching and getting a better sense of the ‘you’ behind the blog. Can’t wait to see the headshots :-)!

I really enjoyed watching the video. You did great. The video definitely brought the space alive in a way that your posts and pics haven’t, so I appreciated that. I have to say though, that you didn’t match up with what I was expecting (in a good way). I think it might be time to update your photo on your blog. Some of those new head shots you talked about…. You rocked it!

Love your mirror in between the shelves..your source? Did you buy the two cabinets separate from your countertop? You ended teasing us with a storage area that looked like Ikea Billy bookshelves with Teal colored containers and the white 3 ring binders. Like that idea. How did you find the teal containers..or did you spray paint them that color? Can’t wait to see that project completed.

    • Jackie says

      June 23, 2013 at 9:20 pm

Betty, The mirror was a second-hand find along with this dresser I made over for the room. You can read more about the cabinets here. I created a custom countertop for them. I am still working on the storage closet…organizing takes time :) But, the shelf units and teal bins are from the Closetmaid line at Target.
