With two young boys, my husband I rarely get a break and often find ourselves near the breaking point.  Last month we asked my parents to babysit for one night, so we could take a little break.  We took our night off as an opportunity to do something fun.  We booked a room at the Foshay Tower in Minneapolis, which was converted into the W Minneapolis.

After dinner on Nicollet Mall at Masa, my husband said the Blue Man Group was playing near by and we might be able to get tickets.  We walked over a few blocks to the Orpheum and were able to get box seats for the show.  With a glass of wine in hand we enjoyed the show.  It was the perfect show for a carefree, fun night in the city.  Any show that ends with giant glowing beach balls floating around the theater and TPing the Orpheum is a good time in my book.  We were sort of shocked they let them do it in this historic theater with this grand chandelier, but the chandelier was unscathed.

After the show we retired to our hotel room and ordered dessert from room service (jumbo chocolate cake and ice-cream from Manny’s Steakhouse, if your curious).  The room had a fun modern vibe.  My favorite part was this flashy pink bar and the skyline view from our room.

In the morning we tried to sleep in, but our bodies are trained to wake to the boys.  So, we down to Keys Cafe for breakfast and then made sure to head up to the observation deck on top of the Foshay.  We soaked in some cool views of the city.  I also spotted this awesome reflection of the Foshay in a neighboring building.

It was nice to have a break from the boys.  It was fun to act like tourists in our own city.  We will definitely be scheduling more escapes in the future.

Love the W, LOVE Keys Cafe! Ah, a night out on the town is calling my name…with a much cheaper hotel, however! I did get the opportunity to stay at the W once for a friend’s bachelorette party, what an awesome place! Prohibition is really fun, too.

Thanks for commenting Michelle. Nice to here from another local. We ended up buying the room pretty last minute and got a great deal compared to the other hotels in the area. Left us extra money for a nice dinner and show :)

That’s sounds like so much fun and relaxing. My husband and I could use a night away. My son is now the age that he could stay the night with a relative without being too homesick. Thanks for the fun pics.

Lisa, It totally took us a while to get comfortable with the night away too. Our minds were eased by doing something local, just in case. It went so well, we are now considering a weekend trip.

Hi Jackie, I have been reading your blog for a while and didn’t realize you were a MN gal too! I grew up in Mps. and now live in Alexandria, but come back to the cities to shop often. A night away at the W sounds wonderful! Glad you guys had fun. If I can get up the guts to leave my three little ones for the night, I will have to check it out! Keep up the great work!

Thanks Kari. I love doing these posts and meeting my readers from Minnesota. As soon as you feel comfortable, I am sure you will enjoy a night in the city. It was so fun to pick a hotel in a great area with everything in walking distance.

So when you make the trip to the cities what are your favorite stores to hit up?

My trips are usually short and sweet since my kids are 5, 2, and 10 months (eekk!) and it’s hard to be away for too long. But when I can get away I love stopping in Maple Grove since it’s on the way in for me. I couldn’t pass that area without stopping at Home Goods! My favorite place it go is IKEA for sure. I actually was there a few weeks ago and went through the store three times! Kept seeing new things too since it was super busy. Crate and Barrel is also a fav of mine.

Not sure if you and your family have been to Alexandria or not, but if you are looking for a quick weekend get away this is a great spot. Lots of family things going on and we have a cute downtown with some fun shops :)

Love the Foshay! Weird to think, but before they converted it into the hotel, that’s where I went to the dr!
