Styling the Little Red Cabinet

For someone who does not really like red, this little red cabinet has made me very happy.  It is turning into the perfect nightstand for the guest bedroom.  It was also a fun little styling project.  I managed to style it mostly by shopping my own house.  The only new items were my DIY gold leafed stars.

For the top of the cabinet, I wanted to play up the nightstand aspect and make it welcoming for guests.  I have had this turquoise lamp forever, but it never really had a good home.   The one thing that helps make red work for me is mixing it with turquoise.  This lamp was also the perfect size for a bedside light.

The picture frame was a clearance find at Target about a year ago.  I love the navy and white pattern.  It looks great as a backdrop for the small gold leaf star.  (The pic in the frame is one of my all-time favorites.  It is of my husband and me in formal Air Force mess dress on our second date.)

To make guests comfortable, I added the carafe and water glasses.  The carafe is stainless steel.  We found it at CB2 and had it in our bedroom, but weren’t using it.  I put it on a hammered metal charger that has aged to a beautiful patina.  The stainless steel carafe reflects the patina from the tray.

For the inside of the cabinet, I wanted to play up the bookshelf function.  I added a stack of favorite home magazines and another stack of books.  For the books, I chose a couple random, but interesting ones including Decorate, A Short History of Nearly Everything, and 1000 Places to See Before You Die.

To fill out the shelves I added a beautiful bamboo bowl from Target.  On the lower shelf, I added my Tiffany box.  It was the right size and color to add another pop of turquoise to the vignette.  No, I did not get any gigantic Tiffany jewelry.  The box was actually from the Tiffany baby china I received from co-workers.  I have had the box stashed away in my closet waiting to find a good home.  And, of course, the other gold star looks perfect atop the magazines.

I am loving this whole look.  It is a little more cottage vintage than I am used to, but it really makes this room comfortable and inviting.  I still need to add something to the walls in this corner to finish out the look.

Are you dying to see the rest of this room?  I will be back later this week with the full room reveal.

Is there room for another small table on the other side of the bed? I know you were wrestling with that question earlier. Can’t wait to see the full reveal.

I love how you styled the inside of the cabinet. You’re right, the aqua and red look great together!

I like that you have that bamboo bowl there so they can slip the star into it when they want to read magazines. I love the colors too. Look forward to seeing the rest!
