A New Way to Line Your Drawers & Make Organizing Fun

June 27, 2012 By Jackie

My bathroom junk drawer was out of control.  The biggest problem was the drawer was not full of junk, rather it was full of the things I use everyday to get ready.  It was supposed to be my beauty drawer.  Instead, I was wasting minutes a day rooting through this drawer to find what I needed to do my hair and makeup.  Even a couple wasted minutes can throw off a whole morning routine.

When we moved in and divided up the drawers in the bathroom, I convinced my hubby to let me have 2 out of 3 drawers.  We each got one larger drawer and then I also got the skinny top drawer.  I knew it would be the perfect spot for makeup.  I could just pull it open in the morning and have access to everything I need right at my fingertips.  Unfortunately, I never took time to properly organize the drawer and it was not as useful as I hoped it would be.

Finally, I put myself on a mission to organize this drawer.  On one of my mommy-break trips to Target, I searched high and low for the perfect drawer organizers.  The ones in the kitchen section were ugly white or black plastic and clearly only designed to hold utensils.  I wan’t that impressed with the price either.  I made my way to the bathroom section and found some nice acrylic organizers, but they were a bit small and pricey.  It would have been more than $30 to properly fill the drawer.

My last hope was the closet organization and laundry section.  There I found the perfect organizers.  These clear plastic trays were $5.99 for the larger 5 compartment tray and $3.99 for the small 3 compartment tray.  Together they would fill up the drawer nicely.  The plastic was not as crystal clear as the acrylic bathroom trays, but the price and proportions were much more to my liking.

I got the trays home, slipped them in the drawer, and decided something was missing.  What is the point of having clear trays if all I see through the bottom of them is the boring drawer bottom.  I set out to look through my paper stash to see what I could line the drawer with.  I was coming up emptied handed, until I spotted a roll of chalkboard vinyl.

I lined the bottom of the drawer with chalkboard vinyl (from Michaels).  I was a bit nervous about the black, but the risk paid off and the black bottom drawer looks super elegant under my makeup.

But, I couldn’t just leave it plain.  Of course not.  So, I got some chalk from my kids stash and wrote and doodled to my hearts content.  Any good organizer will say something like “a place for everything and everything in it’s place”.  Well, it is much easier to give everything a place and keep everything in place with labels.  The chalkboard drawer liner gave me a fun way to label the contents of my drawer.  I mixed it up between words and drawings for a little fun.

Ahhhh, this drawer is so much better than before.  It is so neat and organized.  I can pull it open next to me as a I stand at the sink and have easy access to all my makeup when I am getting ready in the morning.  I am a pretty low-maintenance girl, but I still where a bit of makeup (mostly Aveda, if your curious) everyday.  Having it laid out and organized makes applying it so much quicker.  Plus, whenever I take something out to use it, I see these fun little chalk drawings…

My larger second drawer is where I store all my hair care supplies.  I will be back to share that…as soon as I get it organized :)

Jackie that’s so cute. And you could even use those bright chalkboard markers because they don’t smear or have dust (they are also harder to erase though) if you wanted to add bright colors. Awesome idea.

This looks great! You’ve simultaneously inspired me to find a place to use chalkboard contact paper in my house & to organize my make-up supplies.

Sarah, I don’t think I plug the chalkboard vinyl enough! I love it! We used it on our pantry door to. It is so much easier than the paint. The vinyl also wipes cleaner, which I prefer over the more seasoned look of a traditional chalkboard.

Such a cute idea! Did you spray the chalk drawings with anything before putting the organizers back in? I’d be afraid they’d smear or wipe off if anything shifted.

Thanks Caitlin. I didn’t do anything to preserve the chalk. After a week it still looks the same. Other readers have recommended chalk pens. I think they don’t smear as much and are a bit easier to write with. When I redo my doodles I will try those. The coolest part is I can lift the clear tray out anytime, wipe the slate clean and draw something new!

Found you via Curbly’s chalkboard round up. What a great idea! Too bad it’s cutest when there’s nothing in the drawer. :-)
