My family eats 6-9lbs of bananas per week. That is about 18-24 medium bananas. Yes, I live with a bunch of monkeys (aka my husband and two boys).
The small blue metal colander I had on the counter to hold fruit, has become overwhelmed with the volume and no longer looks cute. It is filled to the brim with bananas and the overflow is eating up all my counter space to the left of the stove.
I needed a larger fruit bowl. I found a wire fruit bowl at HomeGoods for $14.99. I loved the modern shape, but not the antique bronze finish. I decided to spray paint it teal. Now I am totally in love.
I used Rust-Oleum spray paint in Satin Lagoon. Before spray painting, I used a spray primer in grey to coat the wire bowl. Then I did four light coats of spray paint to get a nice even finish.
I needed a new place for the larger fruit bowl. The small colander next to the bread box seemed to be swallowing my counter space already, so there was no way the larger fruit bowl would work in it’s place. I moved the bread box to the larger expanse of counter on the other side of the stove. That left this small counter open for my new fruit bowl and my awesome Tivoli radio. Love to listen to music in the kitchen!
The bright bowl, filled with bright fruits, is ready to usher in spring and summer. It was such a simple way to add a pop of color to the kitchen. Have you spray painted anything with a bold color lately?

Very cute! Is the spray paint you used food safe?
Rachael,
I don’t think so. It is just normal spray paint I found at home depot. We only keep bananas and oranges in it which get peeled before they are eaten. I believe you can use a food safe top coat over the spray paint, but I did not feel the need to for our use.
You’re right, it looks sooooo much cuter in teal! Everything looks cuter in teal. :)
Hi, love your blog! Just curious, as I’ve though of doing the same with a bowl… Do you think the spray paint is ok touching food? Thanks for all of your ideas!
Jennifer, to be honest I am not really sure. We only keep bananas and oranges in the bowl which get peeled before eaten. I think if I were going to use it for apples or grapes I would put a finish coat of food-safe shellac over the spray paint. But I like my apples and grapes cold out of the fridge :)
Wow! I love it! You have inspired me to spray paint our existing wire fruit bowl…perhaps the same color??
P.s. I also love your backsplash – gorgeous!
So CUTE! Love the color :)
I noticed in your pics you left thelip/trim of the granite up. Any thoughts on that? I’m thinking of adding subway tile to our ktichen and we currently have the same lip/trim and can’t decide to leave it or pull it out! Hubby thinks it will look bad to stay, methinks not (and now have a pic to prove it!).
Emiles, I do love the look of tile running straight down to the counter, but here the granite was already installed when we moved in. It seemed easier to just tile above it. If you do go straight to the counter you will want to be sure to use stain resistant grout and good caulk where the tile meets the counter. We plan to add a small kitchen/bar area in our basement and I will be doing a tile installation touching the counter without a backsplash on the counter. Okay, when you show the picture don’t let your husband zoom in too much, because my tile is not grouted yet. How embarrassing, but it is on my to-do list. I just have to get the kids out of the house or to bed first, because they will want to help :)
Love the brightness it has brought to your countertop!
Very cute! I have a wire bowl similar to that in black–I see now what a pop of color can add! I might have to spruce mine up a bit!
hi! teal is my favorite color so yeah, I love it! May I ask where you got that cute green radio?
Hi Julie. Thank you! My husband surprised me with the radio for Mother’s Day last year. He knew I had been coveting it. He ordered from Amazon. I updated the post with the link! I just noticed the other day, that John and Sherry of Young House Love, have the same model in yellow in their kitchen.
yes I noticed their yellow radio too =) So cute! Thank you so much! We have the same colors in our home. My favorite color is teal and my husband’s favorite color is green. We just got married last September. Can you guess the color motif? Haha :p
