My baby boy is turning 2 quicker than I can believe! I usually procrastinate leading up to birthdays and leave myself little time to pull together a great bash. I am getting off to an early start this year pulling together an inspiration board more than 2 months in advance. When I was suggesting birthday party themes to the boys, a bug party was the only on that received two cheers. I took that as a unanimous vote to have a creepy crawly celebration!
Here is what I am thinking…lots of grass, colorful bugs, and of course sweet treats!
A bug party theme is perfect for ushering in spring. However, it will still be too cold for an outdoor party. My challenge will be to bring the outdoors in…in a big way! Giant clusters of paper lanterns (3, Style Me Pretty) in shades of green will bring the jungle in doors. Containers of grass (10, via Your Homebased Mom) that we grow ourselves will make a nice place for bugs to hang out.
For the invitation, I love this scientific-looking invite (5, via Ohdeedoh). I plan to design one similar, but make it a coloring page for the kids with a few bug specimens. It would be super cute delivered with a couple crayons.
No party is complete without some planned activities. For this young age group I want to keep it fun and simple. Temporary bug tattoos (2, via Amazon) would be fun to apply when the kids arrive at the party. I love the idea of setting up some stations to dig for bugs (4, via Sugar Tot Designs). A few of the Bugsy Tic Tac Toe boards (9, via Joann Fabric project ideas) scattered about will keep adults and kids busy.
Last, but certainly not least is the plan for lots of sweet treats. I found a lot of ideas for creatively named candies (7, via Oh Goodie Designs). The candle stick apothecary jars (8, This Old Chair) will make a great display for the candy. I must use my collection of baby food jars to create these worm & dirt brownies (6, via Confessions of a Cookbook Queen). I am truly inspired by this amazing Creepy Crawly Dessert Table (1, via Sweet Designs). My favorite part is the snake creeping around below the cake. You can buy those wooden snakes at Michaels. Also, I want that amazing bamboo tiered cake stand! And, to wash it all down, my collection of DIY glass milk bottles will be used for bug juice!
What a great idea! My son would love digging in the dirt for those bugs.
Hey there, I am planning my son’s 3rd birthday with the same bug theme. Did you design the invites that the kids can color? I am not creative at all, and would love to see what you did. I would be willing to pay for the template or to have you change the name and other information on yours. Thank you.
Loretta, I hope to finish the invite this week and I will definitely share all the details.
Thank you!!
