From Plastic to Fantastic
Inspired by Young House Love’s faux ceramic animal ornaments, we made our own slightly larger version. I found these ugly guys animals in the $1 bins at Target. Following Sherry’s directions, we screwed an eye hook into each animal. These are actually leftover hooks from a picture hanging kit.
Love the expression on my son’s face, acting like it is so hard to turn the screws. I actually started each one for him and his job was to twist them until they were all the way in.
Once the hooks were all in, we sprayed ours with Rustoleum’s White Lacquer spray paint for an extra glossy finish. The lacquer gloss helps them look a lot more ceramic, and a lot less plastic. I also attached jute twine to make a loop for hanging.
These guys are going to look great on the Christmas tree. Fresh as snow in their new coat of glossy white! This is a very budget friendly ornament project. With the cost of the spray paint, each ornament came out to about $2. Not bad for big, classy, lacquered animal ornaments. I even have enough paint to do another batch. And just for fun, here they are strutting their stuff…

Oh man! I love these so much! I’m already getting ideas for a whole tree covered in white shiny faux ceramic!
These are cool! I can see from the pics how the glossiness of the paint really helps bring out the ceramic look.
These look fantastic, and I love that you included your son when you were making these :)
