I love our foyer! It is a wonderful wide and welcoming entrance. Unfortunately we only had this tiny little 2 x 3 rug at the door. It was way too small. When people walked in and tried to take their shoes off on the rug they blocked the door.
Before our family came to visit in July we looked for an inexpensive alternative. At Target I found these utility style rugs for about $20 each. They were the perfect shade of blue. Utility rugs are durable and already backed with a rug pad-like non-slip material. The rug was 4 x 6. Although 4 x 6 would be way better than 2 x 3, I decided to go even larger. I bought two 4 x 6 rugs and lined them up in the foyer. Now guests can come in further down the hallway and remove their shoes. There is also ample space for lots of guest shoes on the rugs without blocking the door. And don’t worry about us covering up the beautiful hardwood…it runs throughout the main level even through the kitchen, so we have plenty more of it exposed. The rugs here actually help protect the floors from sand, dirt, and snow being tracked in the house.
There is still so much potential in this foyer (think lighting, art niches, new door) and you bet there will be more projects showcased here. But for now, sometimes it is the simplest things that make a huge difference!
I love your site. I find it so useful. I’m about to decorate my foyer and am investing in a rug. Would you go with an indoor one or indoor/outdoor? Does it matter at all? Thanks for all you do!
Amie, For high traffic areas, especially by entrances I would always opt for indoor/outdoor. They are much more durable and clean-able. Not to mention…usually cheaper, too :). Thanks for reading!
