The family room is the heart of our home. It is our main living space. With 17 foot ceilings, windows on 2 sides, and a large gas fireplace this room has tons of ambience. It gets lots of natural light in the day, but can still feel really cozy at night. The floor plan for this room is a little odd due to the 45 degree angle along the stairs and the entrance to the basement.
After falling in love with the zinc paint in our office we decided to bring the same color into the family room. It is a very dark color, but with all the natural light the room can handle a dark color. The zinc also goes really well with the slate tiles around the fireplace. To keep the room from being all dark I kept all the curtains crisp white. It provides great contrast with the zinc.
We just got all new furniture for this space. The furniture we had before was not a good fit. We will save those pieces for our future basement. The new sofa is in a zinc-like velvet fabric, but it floats in the room with the lighter driftwood grey wall behind it. Now the room just needs a litte fluffing and personalization.
